IN THE world's hot spots, negotiators quietly work to defuse tension - how they get it right is the hot topic for PhD candidate Ali Naseer Mohamed.

Mohamed brings years of experience to his studies at the Australian National University's (ANU) Asia-Pacific School of Diplomacy.

On study leave from the Maldives' foreign ministry, he is a career diplomat with a passion for conflict resolution.

Understanding what works, he hopes, will help usher the Maldives into a significant role within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

He chose ANU on its reputation and research facilities: "ANU is most definitely the most experienced in Australia in diplomacy and international relations."
